Formed in 1984 by senior Harry Havery and guidance counselor Rodney Hollinger, California Toe Jam is one of the Heartland's most enduring and endearing bands.
Homecoming week was coming up at Sebring High School. The cheer leading sponsor asked Harry Havery, a senior, and Rodney Hollinger, the guidance counselor, to put together a band for the Homecoming rally, "THUNDER". There was no desire to name the band, but the cheer leading sponsor insisted on having a band name on the posters. The guys in the band- Havery, Hollinger, plus students Richie Shepard, Jay Grubb and Mike McElfresh and band directo Roger Nubern just couldn't come up with anything good. Try as they might. Having given up on a name, they started into what had become a ritual during their practice sessions: teasing Roger about his Flip Flop-clad feet and his Toe Jam. and someone yelled, "THAT'S IT!! TOE JAM"! Since the theme for Homecoming that year was "Back to the Beach", they stuck "California" in front. And I guess, well, the name stuck with us!
We are beyond crushed at the passing of founding member Rodney Hollinger. He is already missed beyond words. His wish was to keep the band alive after his passing, and we are honoring his wish to the best of our ability. We are currently gearing up for a limited number of shows beginning in the fall of 2023 and running through our short-run 40th anniversary tour beginning in October 2024.
Our current line-up includes founding member Harry Havery on guitars and vocals, twenty-eight year member TJ Kinyon on bass and vocals, past and present member Jordan Terrell on keys, guitar and vocals and the young guy in the band,Sawyer Humphrey on drums. Harrison Havery and Patrick Fox take care of sound and lights.
